Congo, Virunga National Park

From terrific music to an obsession with fashion and mayonnaise, Congo has much to offer despite its tragic colonial history and endless civil wars. Congo’s magnificent calling card is Virunga NP, Africa’s oldest national park and home to mountain gorillas, chimpanzees and the incredible, active Nyiragongo volcano.

Nyiragongo is a beautiful stratovolcano that features the world’s largest lava lake. Nyiragongo soars above the city of Goma and the surrounding Virunga NP and sends plumes of smoke into the sky, before becoming a flaming beacon visible for miles around after sundown. The trek to the top is an absolutely unmissable experience

Nyiragongo’s summit rim is largely devoid of vegetation and is frequently dusted with snow. The night will be spent in tents on the rim of the giant crater, high above the active lava lake.

Tour Details

Nyiragongo Volcano is located in the east of Congo, around 19 km from Goma, and is the most active volcano in the world. In 1997 and 2002, flows of very liquid lava broke out from cracks in the volcanic slopes. The lava covered 17 km, reaching the town of Goma in just a few minutes, killing dozens of people, and leaving hundreds of thousands homeless. The eruptions temporarily drained the lava lake in the summit crater and volcanic gases suffocated the heather forests on the upper slopes. But now the forest is recovering, and the wildlife is beginning to return.

The night will be spent in tents on the rim of the giant crater, high above the active lava lake.

What to Expect

Treks to the summit of Nyiragongo volcano begin at the Kibati patrol post, which is approximately 30 minutes by car from Goma. The patrol post is less than a one hour drive from the Mikeno Lodge in Rumangabo.

Park rangers lead all treks and porters are available for hire. The time required to reach the summit depends on the average fitness of each group, but typically takes 4 to 6 hours. The climb begins at 1989m (6,525 ft) and ascends to 3470m (11,382ft).
